Review: Fun fact: Octopuses have three hearts, blue blood, and a complicated nervous system. Two hearts pump blood to the gills, where oxygen is collected, while the third pumps oxygen-rich blood around the body. Their blood is blue because it uses a copper-based protein called hemocyanin to carry oxygen, rather than the iron-based hemoglobin found in humans. the heart responsible for pumping blood around the body stops beating when an octopus swims! This may help explain why octopuses often prefer crawling along the seafloor instead of swimming long distances. Their arms are unusual: many neurons are located in their arms, allowing each arm to process information and control movements with some independence. Many species can change their skin color, patterns, and texture to camouflage themselves, communicate, or intimidate predators. So, an octopus is a three-hearted, blue-blooded, shape-shifting animal with eight semi-independent arms. Nature went all-in on this creature in the ocean, too!!!
